Membership in ALADS, the organization that has protected deputy sheriffs for the past 30 years, has now been expanded to include the ranks of the reserve deputy sheriff. Throughout the history of ALADS, our organization has represented only deputy sheriffs. We have elected to be a deputies only organization so as not to cloud issues with competing groups.

Many of the job risks that face full-time deputies are also relevant to the reserve deputy sheriff. Criminal and civil actions on deputies are becoming more excessive. Should any of these things happen to you, ALADS will be there to protect your interests.

Administrative Matters

Legal counsel will provide advice and counsel on administrative matters and will appear on behalf of the reserve member in any case where a liberty interest hearing is required and/or provided.

Civil Actions

Representation will be provided to members in any civil suit where the plaintiff has alleged that the reserve member was acting with the course and scope of duty; and where the public entity has denied the member representation but ALADS, through its designated legal affairs coordinator, has determined that the reserve member was acting within the course and scope and course of duty. If the defense is being provided by the public agency, ALADS attorneys will monitor the defense, at the member's option, to ensure that the interests of the member are being protected.

Criminal Matters

An ALADS reserve member will be afforded legal representation, after criminal charges are filed, so long as the charges stem from conduct which is within the course and scope of the members duties as a reserve deputy sheriff.

Appeals To Superior Courts

The ALADS Board of Directors, in some instances, may identify a case where the issues presented are of such legal significance in nature to the interests of the membership, as a whole, that an appeal to the superior court on an administrative action will be authorized.

Miscellaneous Legal Representation Services

The legal plan provides for a consultation by the participant or the participant’s spouse with a panel attorney on a general legal matter, limited to one hour in length per year.
